Personality;
Octavian is a boy in whom philosophy, stratagem, logic, and reason flourish, for whom intellect and morality are held as the highest standards and pillars of man but for whom the smallest intimacies on the human level, such as affection, comfort, and kindness are mysteries for they lack manuals like Plato's ideals of the republic or strict sets of virtues like the Catonian philosophy of living.

As the young son of the Julii, Octavian's position in Rome has been a daunting one. One that requires presence and reputation, intellect, but also a knowledge of how to seduce and charm in order to gain the favor of the people. While even as a young boy Octavian had no lack for intellect, he is greatly wanting for the latter qualities that are generally required for a Roman politician: the ethos of a Roman man, one that relies on the air of the soldier, the conquerer. Something that Julius Caesar had, and Mark Antony has, but Octavian, in his preference for solitude and poetry, does not. At all times his unrelenting mother, Atia, has tried to manipulate and urge him into the mold of these men, forcing on him sword training and intimacies with women, but he has resisted time and again until at last he breaks away from the household in bitterness after being beaten by Antony.

Yet that isn't to say there is no iron in his blood. While Octavian is ill suited for the role of soldier, his seeming indifference and what Atia refers to as "a distinctly feminine anima," masks a capability for the brutal. He is seen at several times to have bursts of anger and uncontrollable rage, particularly when he feels insulted. He beats a hired man of Pompey to his possible death and later aids in the torture and murder of a man who made a cuckold of a friend. Octavian's violence is thus tightly intertwined with his intense sense of right and wrong, a sense of justice that includes heavy handed punishment for those who disregard the pinnacle virtues of Octavian's morality. This is not to be confused with the official Roman justice system, for which Octavian often expresses disdain as it functions on corruption and immorality.

After leaving home and gathering strength in Campania, Octavian returns to Rome victorious in his defeat of Mark Antony and referring to himself as Caesar, placing himself directly in the lineage of his adoptive father. His acts are measured and meticulous at all times, be it with friends or family, and even his taking of a wife is something that is done with mechanical precision and tact. Having grown, he has become better suited to handling the men of the senate, and even outdoes the wise and clever Cicero when he manages to be declared the youngest consul in the history of Rome at the age of 19. However, all the while he further alienates his family, including his sister who had been his closest ally in his youth. Unable to express things beyond a political or strategical nature, he can only address his mother and sister in terms of how they might behave or act as pawns within his game to win the popularity of the people, and when he tries to entreat them with attempts at kindness, the words fall flat for he has no understanding of how to approach such a situation in which he is made vulnerable at an emotional level.

What insult to the republic, its consul kidnapped by foreign gods. Surely blessed Venus would be displeased to find her own lineage so unceremoniously disrupted and disrespected. [A pause as jade eyes, cold as glass and sharp in their disdain, regard his surroundings in displeasure] Barbarity.

No true Roman would bow to a god from beyond the Rhine, and nor shall I. [He moves to stand] But if I am expected to remain here, as it seems is the intention of these ...gods... then I should like to know if there is a library. A library or a forum should suffice, so long as lectures are held or scrolls are to be found.

[If he can not begin his machinations for Brutus and Cassius, at least he can bide his time with arming his mind to the task.

He then gives pause, straightening with pale brow furrowed, as if a thought has suddenly alighted upon his shoulder and distracted him momentarily from his great task of empire.]

Ah. I suppose it would be best I introduced myself...I am Gaius Octavian Caesar. Consul of Rome.
